Indie Pride Day

It doesn't seem to be a thing anymore, but I'm going to keep it going. Happy Indie Pride Day!

It was many years ago that I self-published my first book, and far too long since I published my latest, but there are more to come! I promise!

The fifth book in the Envious Series is in the editing and cover designing phase so I can't put a date on it. But it is coming! And next year I will likely have a lot of trouble trying to hold five books for this photo!

The world likes to push people toward self publishing with success stories designed to inspire you. They claim that writing is easy! You'll sell a ton of books right out of the gate! You just type, hit publish, and wham! You're an author. Eventually you'll even quit your day job.

In reality, writing is hard. It takes work, time, focus and a constant stream of inspiration. And that's the fun part.

Sure it's easy to hit publish on the computer and watch your book listing appear. But the job of self publishing doesn't end with publication. Books don't just sell on their own. They have to be discovered. And in a world where 4 million books are published each year, there is a lot of competition for discovery.

Self publishing can be frustrating, soul-sucking work. And in acknowledgment of that, we deserve a day to step back and exclaim, "Look what I made!" Take joy and pride in the great accomplishment it truly is.

Happy Indie Pride Day!

Travel Topic 1: Jetlag

Okay, so jet lag is something worth mentioning. When you cross the Atlantic there is about a six hour time difference.  Google is full of useless tips in dealing with it. You'll swear to prepare for it. You'll promise yourself that you will work to get close to the schedule of your destination in the weeks leaving up to the big trip. You'll plan to go to bed early and get up early in effort to shrink the hour difference between home and your destination.

Let's just skip the theatrics. YOU WON'T. Life gets in the way. For me, I procrastinate most when it comes to going to bed. But really, the hardest part was getting everyone else on board. Overtime at work was piling on. And my husband ended up working a different schedule than usual, meaning he wasn't home by the time I planned to be well on my way to slumberland. And I wasn't going to sacrifice our time together for a little sleep.

My last ditch plan was to make sure to sleep through the entire flight. Okay, okay. Cue the mocking laughter. Yes. Sleeping on a plane is difficult. For one, the excitement of the trip beginning is like a shot of adrenaline that makes closing your eyes especially difficult. Then everyone on the plan is shifting around and chatting. Kids are crying or making loud declarations like "We're in the air! Up in the air!" Cute, but not when you're supposed to be sleeping.

On cross-Atlantic flights they serve dinner. I ate before getting on the plane. Nice planning, I know. But when I smell food, I wake up and I get hungry. Doesn't matter that I just ate a steak salad big enough for two. Don't care that the food probably smells better than it tastes. My tummy gets grumbling and my nose honing in on scents.

After dinner comes dessert. Then the attempt at sleep really begins. They give you a blanket, pillow and eye mask. It helps. So does a good neck pillow. But there's only about four hours before they will start serving breakfast. And of the four you'll probably only actually sleep for maybe two hours.

But we arrived and I was fine! Perfect! Ready for the day. Lunchtime is when the exhaustion sets in. For me the only way through it was to keep moving. Sit when you just can't stand anymore, but keep it brief and start moving again.

It was about four days before I didn't feel the jet lag anymore. Oddly, my husband was fine. His ever changing work schedule helped him to adjust faster than me with my cemented eight to five routine.

So, yes, you will probably have jet lag. My advice is to keep moving, have dinner a bit early, and sleep in a bit the next morning. Do not reserve a table for 8:30pm! Do not schedule a 9am reservation at the Louvre for the next morning! But if you do, at least you'll have plenty of beautiful artwork and countless halls to keep you moving.

The "Travel Bug"

Those of you who have read Envious Deception know that two of my characters talk quite passionately about a desire to travel. To visit new places, explore, and disappear into adventure of it.

I recently had an adventure of my own. While I have been to Europe before (three times actually), back then I'd always assumed I would return soon. I caught the “travel bug” and wanted nothing more than to immerse myself in the culture, art, and architecture of countless places. I had no idea how long it would take for me to return or how much things would have changed in that time, both for me and for Europe.

I know this isn’t technically the purpose of this blog, but it is mine and as a woman who is quickly approaching that hill everyone always talks about, I no longer care to follow silly self-imposed rules like that. So the next few posts will be mainly about my trip, what I got wrong, what I got right, and what I wish I knew before I went. Hopefully this helps someone out there who is planning the biggest trip of their life. And also me, as I plan for the next big trip which will hopefully be very soon.

As always, happy reading! And happy travels!

Envious - Free Book Days

Free Days

Free Envious days are coming up again! November 4th through 8th Envious will be free on Amazon. Be sure to add it to your wishlist and calendar so you don't miss out.

Envious is the first book in a mixed genre series. Forbidden love, mystery magic, and probable insanity. Envious is angsty, cutting, and addictive.

Do you believe in reincarnation?

ENVIOUS

Book 1 of The Envious Series

"May not even death stop my heart from seeking to free my love."

I have dreams, visions of past lives, that haunt even my waking hours. My past lives are filled with danger, deceit, and fleeting moments of love. And they are beginning to rule every moment of my present life.

Since meeting Eric at college, they have only grown stronger. They are telling me something I cannot ignore: that he belongs with me, not Aurora, my best and only friend. She is everything that I am not: beautiful, popular and kind. But something isn't right about her.

My visions warn me not to trust her. They show me fantastical, impossible, and terrifying things.

Trusting in my visions could cost me everything, but ignoring them could cost my life.

Review Highlights for Envious by Katie Keller-Nieman

"WOW, and WOW again! Great novel from a new young writer with a stunning imagination...The story will twist and turn you Like vines around a tree.. you're not sure which tendril will take you next." MaryAnn Breedlove, The Kindle Book Review

The News Media Needs to Change, and Syrup Told Me So

I dont often get up on my soapbox, but this needs to be said:

This is why America is split. This is why we have become two sides screaming at each other without resolution. It is the news media and we must call on them to change their ways.

We rely on the news, whether in article or broadcast format. We go to them to be informed because that's all they do, 24 hrs a day, is spit out information to the world. And as we weed through the fake news to the reputable sources, we are still left adrift with partial information and vague answers. Why? Why give us only half the story? Is it because the other half is too shocking? Is it because the reporters are too lazy to find it? Or are they too rushed to be the first to announce it?

I overheard that Aunt Jemima was changing its name and replacing the illustration on the bottle. These people thought it was ridiculous that even syrup was now considered racist, so first I searched to find if what they said was true. It was. But why? The article I read stated that the syrup had racist roots, but gave no indication of what those roots might be, insinuating that it was because making syrup was a subservient role. That answer didnt sit well with me so I checked another news source. Their information was just as vague. Finally, on the third try, I found an article that actually explained! Imagine that! Being given knowledge by a news source, not just fear, annoyance and confusion.

This article described the shocking history. I was informed that "Aunt Jemima" was a slave song, sung in performances by people in black face depicting happy, dancing slaves. Knowing this, who could possibly disagree that, yes, syrup can be racist and it needs to change?

This is not the only case where the media has caused outrage and dismissive responses with their lazily researched, rushed to post news. What kind of world do we live in where the news we turn to for unbiased information is what pits us all against each other? It is time for that to change. It's time for the media to understand that they have a responsibility to print and post and broadcast the whole story, not half, not just a catchy headline, but a fully researched and informative news story.

If you would like to read the article for yourself, the link to NPR is below. Here's to being well informed!

Envious Deception Cover Reveal and Release

I have wonderful news! It's official! Envious Deception will be released in 2019! December 7th!

The ebook is currently in the last stages of preparation, but I am determined to release it this year, more specifically on December 7th. It will be available in paperback and kindle ebook.

I'm hosting a small Facebook party to celebrate:
https://www.facebook.com/events/481919805757119/

Feel free to invite your friends! The more the merrier!
I'll be posting updates, promos and prizes the closer we get to the release date.

Thank you for being so patient. These past couple years were difficult physically and emotionally, but things are looking up and I can finally place my focus on writing again!

Envious Deception is the 4th book in The Envious Series, and my favorite! Of course I say that about every last book I finish, but it's really good, I swear! Check out the cover:

Some mistakes can never be forgiven.

We have a deal.
A simple trade is all we need to secure our safety in this life, only leaving us vulnerable in the next.
But nothing is ever simple when it comes to magic.

Time is running out to make the trade with Aurora, a trade we aren’t sure is a safe bet.

In our search for answers, new visions surface. We find more secrets, as well as truths we never could have imagined.

The visions become dangerous in unexpected ways. They threaten our health. They change our perspective of the past. And they change us.

Eric is not the same. With each vision we share, he slips further from the boy I once knew.

Aurora warned him against me. I had thought she lied or exaggerated. Now I’m not so sure.

I thought I knew why she hated me, but I was wrong.

Her hate runs deeper than envy. And maybe she has every right to want me dead.

Maybe death is what I deserve.

Thank you so much for being a part of my book world and as always, happy reading!

Happy Holidays! Let's celebrate with a sale!

First an update:
Writing has been happening, editing has been happening and I'm close to finishing the final cover design for Envious Deception, which will be released in 2019.

Audiobooks are a growing possibility for The Envious Series. I know many people like to listen while they commute or craft or even cook. I know I've done all three. The plan is to voice my own books, which might be tough for me since I typically don't curse and we all know Todd does a whole lot of that! I've been spending time on my voice-over work, trying to get the pacing just right for easy listening and it's coming along well. Any audiobook releases probably won't happen in 2019, since I have so much writing crammed in my brain, needing release, but I'll keep working at it!

Now, the sale:
I'm so excited to let you know that The Envious Series is going to be on sale for Christmas! From Saturday December 22nd to Saturday December 29th, each of the three books will be on Kindle Countdown, starting at on 99 cents! Books make great gifts, so tell all your friends, and if no one gets them for you, they'll still be on sale for a few days after Christmas!

Finally, holiday wishes:
I want to wish all my readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thank you for your support and loyalty. I can't wait to dive into 2019 with you!

Also, Oliver says hi.

Envious Update 2018

I know some of you are probably wondering by now, so let me set your minds at ease.
Yes, I am alive.
Yes, I am still writing.

Today is Envious's Bookiversary! It's been four years since it was published. Four crazy years! I've learned a lot about publishing, written a lot about Sandy and the gang, and have even more in the works.

It's been a long time since my last post. Sorry about that. Since then I have been working hard on book 4 in The Envious Series. Currently book 4 is in its editing stages. After that comes many more stages before it will be ready for publishing. Since your wait will be long, I wanted to give you something to hold you over.

The fourth book picks up where the third left off and catapults us into deeper understanding of Cassandra, Eric and Aurora. Who they are, how they are, and why they are. I hate to give anything away, so I'll just leave you with this teasing quote (unedited):

I could hear his breathing,
harsh and hurried as I struggled beneath him.

The willows wept overhead, mourning the
loss we both knew was coming.

He could never live with himself after this...

Here's the sneak peek:
Birds chirped outside my dark surroundings, their song gleeful at the passing of the storm. They represented the opposite of the feelings I felt coursing through my veins. The aged door swung open, revealing cheerful sunlight and a widespread devastation that mirrored the ache growing within me. Tree limbs and bright green leaves were scattered about; an apple tree, severed down the center, had been shattered by lightning, reduced to splinters. It had no hope for survival, and neither did I.
I emerged from the cabin, doubting everything I had come to know. Doubting my understanding of the world, doubting myself, and knowing that my end would be coming soon, despite the safety I thought I had.
The tattered old leather-bound book bent in my hands, proof of all that would come to pass. It slipped from my fingers, hitting the damp ground. Pages turned, fluttering in the light breeze, and I raised my head. I would not sit back and let this happen. Not again. I had to be strong this time.

Art is Everywhere.

Music is art.
Jewelry is art.
Painting and photography are arts.
Writing is art.
Film is art.
Fashion art.
Graphic design art.
Furniture is art.
Textiles are art.
Architecture art.

How dull, uncomfortable, and boring the world would be without art and artists.

Perhaps we shouldn't put down the importance of art.

Two Years and I'm Still Here.

February 2016 marks two years since Envious was first published.

I'd like to share with you the details of my author journey, so that maybe you can find encouragement in whatever journey you are on, or are thinking about embarking on:

More than two years ago, I had a manuscript which I had no intention of ever publishing, and stack of drawn pages for a comic book series that I had no clear plan for. Publishing was too costly. I didn't have the money available for wholesale printing costs, and no plan for what to do with 500+ books even if I did have them printed. I was working a job I was good at. It barely paid the bills and it gave me no feeling of fulfillment. After doing so well in school and college I felt like a complete failure. It felt like my soul was slowly dying. My art career hadn't panned out the way I'd hoped. It hadn't panned out at all, and slowly, through the years, I lost energy to put into drawings and stories that once sustained my artistic hopes. No one was going to pick up my graphic novels, and despite having so many people who loved my artistic style, no one would give me a job. I was trapped in a world that was not accepting me.

It was at that time of the soul-sucking mundane that I gave a second look to my manuscript. About to toss it into the garbage, I decided to read it to see if there was any hope of turning it into a comic book series. It was then that I realized it was already in the medium it belonged in. It needed no drawings to bring my writing to life. The writing was already lively. It was as good as the books I enjoyed to read, so why had I ever written it off? Why had I ignored it and pushed it aside, considering it not good enough?

I looked into the cost of printing a paperback novel. Still much too high. Still out of reach. Then I pursued a search for a literary agent. I scoured lists of them at the library, searching for those who would accept my genre and and submissions. I began sending out email after email, including the specifics that each called for. I didn't get many rejections. Most of my submissions never made it that far. They bounced back immediately with automated replies that unsolicited submissions were no longer being received. I was dead in the water, searching for a nibble in a vast sea without any hungry fish.

Then my husband gifted me with a kindle, and it changed everything for me.

I began downloading books and read two that captivated me. Sterling by Dannika Dark, and Branded by Keary Taylor. I looked to the publisher credit. Createspace. That didn't sound like any publisher I was familiar with. I went to the authors' websites and discovered something amazing. These books were self published, and they were incredible. Then I realized something... Self publishing wasn't for the books that weren't good enough to make the cut. It was for those authors brave enough to step out on their own. Suddenly, my impatience with the publishing game didn't make me feel like a failure. I didn't have to keep waiting and hoping for a chance. There was another way.

It was at this point that I changed course, and also was laid off from my job. It was a misfortune that masked a blessing. I set about reinventing my career. I focused on my books and at the same time, a change in vocation into the gaming art industry. I taught myself programs like Z-brush and 3DS Max while writing more and editing constantly. I readied my book for beta reading and for professional editing. By some stroke of luck, I had access to an editor through a family member. She graciously accepted my book and I was on my way.

Then a bump in the road. I needed to go back to work. I'd been applying to jobs all the while, but hadn't even scored an interview. I'd taken that as a sign that I was moving in the right direction with my books, but hit the point in February 2013 when I had no other choice. I had to go somewhere that I had hoped not to. I found a job in a different town, with a long commute, less pay than my previous job, and it was back in a similar line of work that I had found so draining before. I had made so many strides, but found myself back where I started (and a few paces back) but something was different. Hope had returned. A new goal energized me. After a few months, I was forced to make the decision between art and writing. There wasn't time for both. And writing won out.

In the two years following that point, I have published two books, and have another that will be released soon. I have more than doubled my profits over last year (which actually doesn't amount to much, but double is double!) and learned so many things,, which I would like to share:

1. Writing is the easy part. A writer's desire to write all the time is what makes everything they do for marketing so important because...

2. Selling books isn't easy. Dumbly, I'd thought that once I hit that publish button readers would find me. I didn't expect hundreds of ales, but I'd never thought my book would be siting at the bottom of a very deep, dark hole, with thousands of books piled on top of it. Seriously, every sale I made, I knew exactly who had bought that book, which made the false promises of friends and acquaintances glaringly obvious. And they thought I would never know. Because they though like I had thought, that my book could be found on its own. How silly of us.

Since that realization, I have learned much about the world of marketing. I have found many things that do not work for me, and a few things that sort of do. Keeping in mind...

3. Stay optimistic. I used to have to repeat this to myself all the time, but after maybe a year and a half, it's finally sank in. I used to seek out famous books and scour their bad reviews in a reminder to myself that my book can't please everyone. Even books considered "the best ever written" have piles of snarky one star, hateful reviews. And honestly, who wants to read a book with only top notch reviews? I have found that sometimes a person's angered complaint of a book sparks my curiosity and makes me want to read it to see what all the fuss is about.

So after two years I'm still puttering along, slowly gaining momentum. Sometimes I think I should be further along than I am, but then I think back and see just how far I have come. The struggle was very real and intense, but I made it through, and I keep on going. Strides, while shorter than I'd like, are happening.

At the risk of sounding cliche, Rome was not built in a day. Things take time, and from what I've seen in the past two years, I am grateful for my struggles because small strides are working, not only to gain readers, but also in keeping my soul alive and energized. And that really what living life ifs all about.

Here's to two years and counting!!

Cassandra Has a Secret

Cassandra Annabelle Whitmer, Sandy as she's called by most, has a secret. The dreams that haunt her sleep aren't like most people's. They are of another time. Lives she's lived, dating back to the middle ages.

"I don't care if it's normal!' I yelled through dry tears. I spoke harshly, hoping my words would penetrate his thick skull, 'I know it's real."

But none of that matches the secrets that have been kept from her by those closest to her. Her past lives were filled with danger, and deception. And her visions of them point her to the truth about her past, her present, and her future.

They also point her to Eric, the gorgeous guy she's been trying to forget. Her dreams refuse to let her. He's more than just her best friend's boyfriend, more than the man she secretly loves. He stands at the center of it all.

Sandy is in love with her best friend's guy, and if her vivid, waking dreams are real, she's been in love with him for centuries.

Eric isn't anything like Sandy expected her sweet, though sometimes cruel friend Aurora to seek out in a guy. Her past lovers had been arrogant. Cocky. And without a care in the world for Sandy. But Eric sees her. And Sandy realizes that there's something different about him. Something that Aurora works hard to change. And that something is slowly winning, only to reveal just how dark and twisted a friendship and relationship can be.

Light and Dark, Lost and Found, Life in the In-between

Light and dark, we all have it, in vibrant varying shades.Even the happiest, smiling people experience the darker emotions.

Looking back on recent posts, I realize I may have been a bit depressing. I apologize for that. My mood tends to be a few shades darker in the winter. But is that something that should be apologized for? How should I be? How should I act? When is it socially acceptable to have a rough day or week? Light and dark, we all have it, in vibrant varying shades.

Even the happiest, smiling people experience the darker emotions. The range of human feelings is incredible. Why should it be socially acceptable to only be a single one? It isn't natural to hide them away. We were given these emotions to be felt.

We all seek happiness, but to be eternally happy is impossible. Highs and lows come with life. In my writing, I choose to show it. The full range of emotions. They are all beautiful storms in their own right. Passion. Rage. Love. My characters feel very deeply, and aren't afraid to show it to the reader. I don't believe in glazing over the difficult emotions to tell the story. The emotions are the story. They are the building blocks, the foundations that build the characters whose actions build the story.

For some time, the darker side is all you see of my characters. They are swallowed by the lows of life, whether petty or severe. It is not in my nature, or my right to judge, or demand validation from those experiencing difficult times. We are each our own person, handling our lives as best as we can. What may be the breaking point for one, could be daily life for another. It does not make them weak or strong, but simply themselves. Unique from every other person in the world. No one should be expected to manage life in a particular way. We each have our own path, our own obstacles, our own help along the way.

ENVIOUS is a story of growth, and for that change to occur, there must be a starting point. I know many people may not agree with Sandy's or Todd's foul attitudes, but all will be told in time. All will be revealed. What you may not understand or agree with now, could become your reasons to love them, and the part within yourself that shares those same insecurities and worries. And that is what makes them and their story so real. Like us, they are imperfect. They are learning, growing and changing. And with them, I will change, and I hope some who read will learn from them and grow too. That is the goal of my writing. Understanding. Acceptance. And embracing the imperfections that make us all human.

"You've made that brutally obvious these past few weeks. You're not perfect. No one expects you to be. But that doesn't mean that you can't be a good person anyway." -Envious

"Now I was too proud? Who cares, I have a right to be proud, to stand up for myself." -Envious Obsession

"He was lost. Metaphor for his life. One big map with no road signs, just drive and drive. Drive? He looked at his gas gauge. He was running on fumes. Another fitting metaphor." -Envious Obsession

"Maybe it was best to let the water take him." -Envious Obsession
