Birds chirped outside my dark surroundings,
their song gleeful at the passing of the storm. They represented the opposite
of the feelings I felt coursing through my veins. The aged door swung open,
revealing cheerful sunlight and a widespread devastation that mirrored the ache
growing within me. Tree limbs and bright green leaves were scattered about; an
apple tree, severed down the center, had been shattered by lightning, reduced
to splinters. It had no hope for survival, and neither did I.
I emerged from the cabin,
doubting everything I had come to know. Doubting my understanding of the world,
doubting myself, and knowing that my end would be coming soon, despite the
safety I thought I had.
The tattered old leather-bound book bent in my hands, proof of all that
would come to pass. It slipped from my fingers, hitting the damp ground. Pages
turned, fluttering in the light breeze, and I raised my head. I would not sit
back and let this happen. Not again. I had to be strong this time.
